Practicing spelling and sight words is an important part of learning to read and grow as a reader. However, when I was growing up we practiced our words one of three ways: writing sentences, writing the word 5 each, or with flash card. But that is boring and tiring… not to mention it is a giant fight with some kids. That is why I compiled a list of 60 ways to practice spelling and sight words.
When Cakey was in Kindergarten I had her practice her words by writing them five times each and boy was that challenging. Later in the year we started using flash card also which gave her a bit of a break from writing. When Doodles was in Kindergarten her teacher occasionally sent home a “Spelling Menu” with different ways to practice. The spelling menu had a bunch of new to me ways to practice and the girls enjoyed it.

I started compiling the ways the girls enjoyed into a master list for when the teacher didn’t send home a new list. We also came up with our own ways and added it to the master list. Our current list has 60 ways to practice spelling and sight words.

I print the list front and back on a piece of paper for both girls. Then I keep the list with the girls’ school work folders. Each day they get to choose how they practice their words. I have them write the date on the activity they chose that way they don’t repeat an activity.
How do your kids practice their spelling and sight words?
Have a great day!
