It’s FRIDAY! Time for another fun addition of #AskAwayFriday. This week I’m swapping with Echo from The Mad Mommy and we’re chatting about 4th of July and summer.
Echo’s site is full of quick and simple recipes, homeschooling by the seat of her pants, and funny parenting stories. So pop over and check her out!
Echo asked me 10 questions and I answered below.
1. Its summertime and they say the livin’s easy. What is the best thing about summer for you?
I like the longer days. Granted it’s sweltering hot here in sunny Florida all the time but I really like having the option of taking evening strolls with the family without it being pitch black.
2. What is one activity that you do only in the summer?
Swimming and eating ice cream for no other reason than it’s hot!
3. What is your FAVORITE summertime meal?
I like to cool treats and easy meals during the summer. My favorite summertime meal would have to be grilled burgers and dogs with grilled zucchini and yellow squash and finished off with strawberry shortcake! Oh and cucumbers in vinegar with salt and pepper!
4. Tomorrow is the 4th! Will you be celebrating? How?
Not really, I guess. James is off today (YAY!) but he has to work tomorrow (BOO!). And not just any work either. He has to work the parking detail for the city’s firework display. My mom and I will probably take the girls over to see the show. They have never seen fireworks before because they were always asleep before the shows started. So it should be pretty exciting for them!
5. Do you enjoy big fireworks or smaller ones at home?
I, honestly, don’t like fireworks! I know. I sound so un-American! I like to look at fireworks from a distance. I hate the burning smell and smoke they make and I really hate the loud ones. I know, I’m such an old fuddy-duddy! And yes, I realize saying fuddy-duddy makes me even older! 😉
Part of my lack of interest in fireworks stems from always having dogs that were scared of them. It just breaks my heart seeing them shaking in fear because of the noise and smell.
6. Do you have any 4th of July decor?
My mom was in the US Army and my brother was planning on being a US Marine. Growing up there was always a US flag hanging out front. We also have small flags in the house and cute signs hanging up but they stay up year round so I guess technically they are not 4th of July decor. Maybe the girls and I should make some for next year….
7. Do you have any summer vacation plans?
No summer vacation plans this year. We are taking a HUGE fall trip though. I’m super duper excited about that!!!!
8. What is your go-to summer outfit?
Umm… I live in Florida, I don’t really have a summer outfit as it’s hot 9 out of 12 months here. I pretty much wear the same thing all year long. I’m a bit of a minimalist so I keep clothes super basic. I love the long, flowy skirts and maxi skirts from JcPenney that I got last summer. I wear them all. the. time. And t-shirts and tanks tops. Oh and flip-flops. Flip-flops are a must here.
9. Beach or pool?
I like both. I love the beach in the “off-season” I’m not much for crowds, can you tell? 🙂 I like to go either in the early morning and leave by lunch or go in the evening just before sunset. My favorite beach is Sunset beach in Tarpon Springs. So beautiful. However, I don’t swim in the ocean so if I want to swim it’s in a pool.
10. What is your FAVORITE summer memory EVER?
I loved our vacation last summer to visit my in-laws in Tennessee. James’ sister and family came in from Indonesia. The girls got to play with their cousins for the first time. They had met before but Cakey was a baby and Doodles hadn’t been born yet, in fact, I don’t think I was pregnant yet.
My mother-in-law has a beautiful flower, vegetable, and fruit garden. It was so cool watching the girls get up each morning and sit by a blueberry bush and eat fresh blueberries straight off the bush for breakfast!
We went to the Memphis Zoo with the kids. Which was a blast. Then took a little just our family trip to Chattanooga for the day before coming home. We visited the Chattanooga Aquarium and downtown Chattanooga. It’s amazing. James and I joked about how fun it would be to live there.
