My girls love the Dragon Masters Book Series by Tracey West. Over the last year, we have collected and read every book. They love reading the books and acting out and making up their own stories.

Over the summer they were trying to play a made-up Dragon Masters game but they didn’t have any dragons from the books. I told them they should make some Dragon Character Puppets from Dragon Masters Books.

After a bit of brainstorming we decided to use toilet paper rolls and egg cartons to make the puppets.

Supplies Needed:
  • Toilet paper or paper towel rolls
  • Egg cartons
  • Craft paint in brown, white, blue, red, yellow, purple, and green
  • Paint brushes
  • Construction paper in brown, yellow, blue, and red
  • Tissue paper or party streamers in green, yellow, white, blue, and orange
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue and glue sticks
  • Craft glue or double sided tape
To Cut:

An adult should supervise and help cut out the egg carton pieces.

  1. Cut the egg carton in half.
  2. On the section that holds the eggs, cut out one section of 2 egg holes including one divider.
  3. Repeat four times if making one of each of the dragons.
For Worm an Earth Dragon:
  1. Paint the entire toilet paper roll and egg carton pieces brown.
  2. Allow to dry for a minute or two.
  3. Apply hot glue to the egg carton piece and attach to the top back of the toilet paper roll.
  4. Paint a second coat on the entire thing.
  5. Allow to dry completely.
  6. Apply green paint to the center of the egg carton piece to create his eyes.
  7. On the brown construction paper draw Worm’s spikes. Then cut them out.
  8. Apply hot glue to the back of the egg carton piece and attach the ears and spikes.
  9. Allow to dry completely.
  10. If desired, cut out green strips of tissue paper. And use craft glue to secure them around Worm. (Worm glows green when using his powers).

Tips:
  • While the dragons are drying apply hot glue to a Popsicle stick and attach it to the back of the dragons.
  • After the dragons have dried punch holes in the back and tie a piece of elastic cord to the puppet. Then the puppet can be added to a stuffed animal for a mask.
  • Or add holes in the eye area and the kids can wear the puppets as masks. My girls preferred to hold the dragons as they played.

The dragon character puppets from Dragon Masters books is so fun to make. The girls really had a lot of fun creating their little dragon friends.
