This year during our homeschool preschool and pre-kindergarten, I thought I would try out some sensory bins. We are almost to the end of the alphabet, so even though some of these letters are hard to do I’m going to finish up.

During our twenty first week, we worked on learning about the letter “U.” To find items for our Letter U Sensory Bin I raided the girls’ toys, my craft supplies, the pantry, and our school supplies.

Letter U Sensory Bin was a lot of fun. 🙂 I had a bit of difficulty coming up with something starting with the letter “U” to use as a base for the sensory bin. I ended up using water so that everything would be underwater. I have included the Amazon links to the specific products I used or noted next to them where I got the items.

Supplies needed:
  • Plastic bin with lid
  • Water
  • 30 white toothpicks (from the kitchen) to make sea urchins
  • 2 1.5 inch styrofoam balls to make sea urchins
  • Plastic letter U’s capital and lowercase
  • Plastic unicorns
  • Paper umbrellas
  • Utensils (from the kitchen)
  • Fine motor tool set

Directions:
  1. Cut about 10 toothpicks in half. Alternate inserting full sized toothpicks and half-sized toothpicks into the 1.5 inch styrofoam balls.
  2. Fill the bin about 1/3 the way with water.
  3. Add in the plastic toys, letters, and utensils.
  4. Give plastic fine motor tool set to your child to use while exploring the bin.

The girls loved exploring their Letter U Sensory Bin. They used their hands to dig around and find the toys, the fine motor tool set to scoop, grab, and pinch up each item. They also counted the different kinds of items, counted the total number of items in the bin, and tried stacking the items.

The first time the girls started exploring their letter “U” sensory bin, I read Underwater Counting: Even Numbers from our Tot School Letter U Books list. During the rest of the week, we listen to music genres or instruments that begin with the letter “U”.

Be sure to stop by my Homeschool Sensory Exploration page where I link all of our sensory bins. And if you are looking for more homeschool activities, make sure you check out my Homeschool page which contains links to our book lists, crafts, and math & science.

Have you ever tried a letter U themed sensory bins with your kids?

Have a great day!
