Disclosure: I do personally know Bryan Davis, he’s my father-in-law, and yes I do get some cool points for knowing an actual published author! However, I probably lost them because I just said that! 😉 Rest assured my personal relationship has nothing to do with my review of Reapers by Bryan Davis and giveaway.
Bryan Davis is a Christian author who writes both fiction and non-fiction. While most of his books are geared toward middle and high school students I happen to enjoy a good young adult book every now and then so I, too, like his books. I have particularly enjoyed his Dragons in Our Midst series and I am slowly making my way through his other series.
Recently, Mr. Davis released Reapers the first book in the planned Reapers Trilogy. Reapers is set in a dystopian, futuristic, urban society and tells the adventures of Phoenix, Singapore, and Shanghai. The three teenage Reapers’ jobs are to collect the souls of the dying and the stray ghosts and then transport them to the Gateway, where the souls reach their final destination…or at least that is what everyone has been led to believe.
I found Reapers to be a bit more dark than Mr. Davis’ other novels probably because there were no dragons. However, it was not so dark that I would not recommend it for middle schoolers. It does deal with death, ghosts, and innocent people dying, which can make you cringe. Parents, use your judgement and read for yourselves before allowing your children to read it. I did shed a few tears while reading it which in my opinion means I was enjoying it. However, I already had a feeling I would like Reapers because I was lucky enough to get to listen to the first chapter while Mr. Davis was working on it (the perks of being related to the author). What I did not expect was enjoying it so much I could not put it down and stayed up once (or maybe twice) reading well into the wee hours of the morning.
James wrote a thorough review on his site if you would like to check that out. James usually spoils the plot in his reviews, and warns about spoilers in every review, but he didn’t spoil anything this time, so by all means pop over and check it out.
If you enjoy dystopian society stories like The Hunger Games you will probably enjoy Reapers. Now on to the fun part… The Giveaway! One lucky reader will win one paperback copy of Reapers, bookmark, and two bags of coffee…because what goes better with a good book than a good cup of joe?
