James and I enjoy reading. One of our favorite things to do as a couple is to read marriage books. After finishing The 5 Love Languages, we decided we wanted to read some parenting books too. Unfortunately, our schedules have gotten busy and we have not got around to reading any parenting books. When I was offered the chance to review Korie Robertson’s new book Strong and Kind and Other Important Character Traits Your Child Needs to Succeed, I jumped at the chance.
Surprisingly, I did not actually know who Korie Robertson was. We don’t watch reality TV and I have never seen an episode of Duck Dynasty. You may wonder why I was interested in reading her book if I didn’t know who she was… well it’s because instilling good character traits in my girls is something that interests me.
As soon as the book arrived, I began reading Strong and Kind. While I have not finished reading Strong and Kind, I do feel that I have a good grasp of the book. The book covers nine character traits: strength, kindness, self-control, honesty, compassion, patience, joyfulness, loyalty, and humility.
Strong and Kind is broken into three sections. The first section, The Importance of Good Character, gives you an overview of good character with biblical wisdom tucked in and family stories to help you relate to them. The second section, Identifying the Character Traits You Want to See in Your Children, this section goes over each of the nine character traits. The third section, How to Parent Kids of Character, ties it all together with biblical examples and the Robertson’s real world experiences.
One thing that immediately stuck out to me was the Howard Family Legacy of Principles for Living. I loved the idea of these principles for living! I’m really looking forward to James and I discussing what principles we want to start with and adding to them as the girls grow. The workbook in the giveaway has a great family legacy worksheet! I can’t wait to start filling it up!
I also like how Strong and Kind allows you, the parent of your own unique children, to pick the two character traits you want to see in your family and taught to your children. Once I began reading Strong and Kind, I started thinking of which traits I want to see in my girls and for me I want to see patience and kindness in my family two things we, especially me, are lacking.
