After the “tough stuff” (bunk beds and mattresses) gets out of the way, it’s time to focus on the fun stuff… bedding! Budgeting for a second baby is a very smart thing to do however when it comes to purchasing “fun stuff” it is easy to get carried away! I knew I needed to take my time and scour the sales ads or I would end up paying way too much for bedding.
I decided that I did not want to purchase “little girl” bedding. While I think that stuff is cute Cakey has no idea who Dora or the Disney Princesses are. I did not want to pick out a bedding set and in a few months have Cakey tell me she doesn’t like Dora or the Disney Princess. That being said, trying to find age appropriate bedding for a little girl was harder than I thought.
Maddie’s nickname is Cakey. So I thought how cute would it be to find some cupcake bedding for her. Adorable, right? Target has some online but only for a toddler size bed. I found a quilt at Home Goods that had cupcakes on it but it was $50 just for the quilt! Now if that $50 was for a set i.e. quilt, sham, and bedskirt I would have purchased it. I just can not see spending $50 on a quilt that she will only use for a few years and then never want to see again.
After deciding the cupcake theme was not going to work, I was left trying to find a theme that was girly but not too little girl. A friend of ours was visiting from New York and wanted to go to Ikea. While we were at Ikea, I was looking at their bedding to see if I could find something for Cakey. I guess I should have been letting her look. My sister brings Cakey up and she has this bright, hot pink and yellow bedspread. The girl was in LOVE with it! Needless to say, we picked up two bedspreads, two throw pillows, and two throw pillow cases all for about $75 (after tax).
Now I was left with trying to find sheets that coordinated with this bright bedding Cakey picked out. A few weeks later I was looking at Target.com and found some sheet sets on sale. I picked out two yellow striped sets (one for each bed) on sale for $9 each and a purple striped set (back up) on sale for $13. Then to complete my order I purchased a guard rail for $30, a plastic mattress cover for $9, and two mattress pads for $20. My total order came to $115 after taxes and shipping.
Our original budget was for $150 for bedding and a guard rail for one bed. I spent a total of $190 for bedding and a guard rail for two beds. Looking at the total spent for just Cakey’s bed I came in at $105 which was under budget by $45!
In the end, we ended up spending a total of $875 on the girls’ room. We came in under budget by $125! Whoop! Whoop! It took us just about 4 months to pull this together but the savings were totally worth it!
Have a blessed day!
