Setting up a baseline budget for any project is a good idea. As I stated in this post we set up a baseline budget of $1000 for getting Cakey’s room ready for double occupancy or as some would call it budgeting for a second baby. Based on our plan and ideas the most expensive piece was going to be the bunk beds.
The bunk bed that we decided on at Ikea were priced at $399. Two weeks after deciding on the bed, while planning my shopping trip to BJ’s I found a $100 off coupon for a bunk bed at BJ’s. The bunk bed at BJ’s was priced without the coupon at $399 and looked similar to the one from Ikea plus it came with three drawers under the bottom bunk. I thought this is excellent! Not only am I going to save $100 but with the added bonus of the drawers I will not have to purchase another dresser which would save an additional $100! Score! The only downside was the coupon was expiring in two days.
Since we had just set up the budget two weeks ago we didn’t have much saved up. After some discussion we decided to go ahead and purchase the bed at BJ’s on the credit card. Normally the credit card is taboo, strictly for major emergencies. We decided that we would take the money we already saved and the next month’s allotted money and pay it directly to the credit card bill. There was one week left in the current month so as long as we paid the bill within 30 days we would not incur any interest. The bunk bed ended up costing us about $320 (after tax) which was a savings of about $215 between the bunk bed and dresser from Ikea.
The bunk bed turned out to be not quite what I was expecting but hey it works. Each bunk can actually stand alone as an individual twin bed so if the girls ever get tired of bunk beds they can have individual twin beds! The three drawers under the bottom bunk are actually one big drawer which means they do not open individually. This is sad. However, that big drawer is actually a trundle bed! I just know that is going to be helpful when the girls are older and want to have friends spend the night! Because the trundle bed is the same size as a twin bed there is a lot of storage space available!
Next week I’ll reveal the actual cost of the mattress! Gulp! Or maybe double Gulp!
Have a blessed day!
