Valentine’s Day is one of the girls’ favorite holidays. They love all the reds and pinks, the hearts, and of course all the sparkly glitter! For a couple of years now I have had this heart-shaped wreath that I picked up at Jo-Ann’s. I’ve wanted to do something with it, but I wasn’t sure what. I have tried each year to come up with something, but nothing felt right.

A few days before we broke out the Valentine’s decorations I had an idea to create a Valentine’s day wreath. It would have an ombre rose pattern encompassing six different colors, with a super sparkly ribbon, and a white Valentine’s Day sign hanging above it. After searching around four different stores for the supplies, I changed the design around a bit.

I ended up using three different colors for the roses instead of six. I opted for a burlap heart stamped ribbon from Michael’s because I loved it. Also the sparkly ribbon was sheer and I didn’t want that. The sign was the hardest part to find. I searched everywhere for a Valentine’s Day sign that was wooden or metal. It had to be big enough for my wreath but not bigger than the entire wreath itself. I finally found a cute wooden Valentine’s Day sign at Hobby Lobby and it was under three dollars too! Whoop! Whoop! 🙂

I absolutely love how my Valentine’s Day wreath turned out. The colors coordinate well with my DIY Valentine’s Day garland. So it looks great in the living room or on the front door.

Supplies:
  • Heart shaped wreath
  • Burlap heart stamped ribbon
  • Red, pink, and white roses bunches (minimum 12 stems each)
  • Wooden Valentine’s day sign
  • Twine or ribbon
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Floral wire cutters
  • Scissors
Directions:
  1. Using the floral wire cutters, cut individual rose stems from the bunches. I like to cut mine with extra long stems because I can cut the extra off later.
  2. Remove any leaves from the rose stems.
  3. Plug your hot gun gun in and let it warm up.
  4. Starting about 2/3 up from the bottom point of the heart wreath, begin laying out your red and pink rose blooms. Two rows across the wreath of red roses with three blooms each. Then followed by two rows across the wreath of pink roses with three blooms each.
  5. Start on one side and push the stems into the wreath for both the red and pink.
  6. Gently pull each bloom up and place a small dot of hot glue at the base of the bloom. Then push it back down onto the wreath.

  7. Then repeat on the other side.
  8. Flip the wreath over. If any of your stems went completely through your wreath use the floral wire cutters to cut them flush with the wreath.
  9. For the white rose blooms, insert one row of three blooms each on both the left and right sides. It will not be exactly the same because it is “V” shaped.
  10. Gently pull each bloom up and place a small dot of hot glue at the base of the bloom. Then push it back down onto the wreath.
  11. Insert additional white roses to fill in any remaining space. I ended up only using 11 white roses versus the 12 each I used for red and pink roses.
  12. Make sure to add a small dot of hot glue to the base of the bloom before pushing all the way down onto the wreath.
  13. Flip the wreath over. If any of your stems went completely through your wreath use the floral wire cutters to cut them flush with the wreath.
  14. Place a dot of hot glue onto any stems that poked through and on any holes that they made. Covering the exposed stems with hot glue helps hold them in place. Also it helps prevent the wires from scratching the door.
  15. On the back of the wreath, beginning in the middle of the first row of flowers on the left or right side place a dot of hot glue and attach the ribbon at a slight angle.
  16. Carefully wrap the ribbon around to the front of the wreath making sure the ribbon is underneath the rose petals.
  17. Continue wrapping the ribbon around the wreath to the back pulling the ribbon taut and overlapping the ribbon slightly. At the back place another dot of hot glue to secure the ribbon.

  18. Continue wrapping the ribbon around the wreath following the heart. Make sure to pull the ribbon taut while overlapping the ribbon slightly. Each time you come to the back of the wreath make sure to place a dot of glue to secure the ribbon.
  19. When you arrive at the other end, make sure the ribbon is underneath the rose petals before placing a dot of hot glue to secure it to the back of the wreath.
  20. Cut off any remaining ribbon.
  21. Hot glue the ends of the ribbon down to the back of the wreath on both sides.
  22. Flip the wreath over.
  23. Check the point of the heart. If there are any gaps between the ribbon, use the scrap piece to cover it up hot gluing both ends in the back.
  24. Position the Valentine’s Day sign at the top of the wreath adjusting it to fit where you prefer it.
  25. Flip the sign over and apply hot glue to the back of the sign. Only where the sign will be touching the wreath.
  26. Quickly flip the sign over and press firmly onto the wreath.

  27. Allow the wreath to dry.
  28. Attach the twine or ribbon to the sign up so that the wreath can be hung.

While it seems like a lot of steps to complete the Valentine’s Day wreath it only took about 40 minutes. And part of that was letting the whole thing dry at the end so I could hang it up! The total cost of this Valentine’s day wreath was about $15 which is a little more than I like to spend on Valentine’s Day decoration but it can be used for more many years. I love how this Valentine’s Day wreath turned out! Do you think the three colors of roses are still ombre-ish? Or do you think I should have kept looking for the six colors of roses?

Have a great day!
