Don’t you hate it when you go to the grocery store and buy a pound of ground turkey (or some other kind of meat) only to discover when stashing it in the freezer you already had a pound (or more!) of it!! I know I do! What a waste of money and time! Or how about when you have to dig around and remove everything in the freezer just to find that loaf of bread you know is in there somewhere! This is just annoying! I know there has to be an easier way of knowing what’s in the freezer without having to go getting frostbite by digging around in there!
Organizing the freezer seems useless especially if there is more than one person in your family! Just as soon as you organize the freezer so that you know where everything is your husband or kids will come along (trying to be helpful) and move stuff around trying to find their English muffins so they don’t have to ask you where they are located. Don’t act like this doesn’t happen in your house. If it’s not your husband or kids it’s the magical elves who think it’s funny to mess with people. Somehow before you know what happened your nicely organized freezer is a mess and you can’t find the bag of broccoli for dinner. Now you’re stressed out and possibly perturbed, this feeling is especially common if you’re pregnant, suffering from a sudden craving and are unable to find what you’re looking for.
It’s not anyone in particulars fault. We all have had freezers look that way. I, however, am tired of it. After all we have another baby coming soon and I need to be able to not only store my freezer cooking but be able to find it quickly. That is why I spent 30 minutes organizing my freezers today. Yes 30 minutes! That was all it took. I went shelf by shelf and grouped like items together. I didn’t stop at just the main shelves, I also grouped the door shelves. After I finished the deep freezer, I went on to do the small freezer above the refrigerator. Everything looks so beautiful and organized! What good is organizing it if no one else knows what is going on? None! That is why I went one step further and created the Upright Deep Freezer – What’s in the Freezer? and Above the Refrigerator – What’s in the Freezer? spreadsheets! I labeled my deep freezer like this: shelf 1 – breads/baked goods, shelf 2 – freezer meals, shelf 3 – meats, shelf 4 – vegetables, door shelves 1 & 2 – fruit, door shelves 3 – cheese, door shelves 4 & 5 – miscellaneous. I did not label my above the refrigerator freezer shelves because there are not many shelves and everything in there is considered miscellaneous. As you can see I left these spreadsheets blank so you can label yours however it best suits you.
After creating the spreadsheets, I filled them in, printed them out and hung them on their respective freezers. Now I can not only see what’s in the freezer but I can also see what shelf it is on without even having to open the door! This will also be helpful when planning my grocery shopping trips and weekly meal plans.
Go on now! Take back control of your freezer(s)!
P.S. As you can see I wrote this post while I was still pregnant. It kept getting pushed back because I decided to post about freezer cooking first.
