This year during our homeschool preschool and pre-kindergarten, I thought I would try out some sensory bins. I make no guarantees that I will do one each week or that I will do them all year for two reasons. One I do not know if the girls will like them. Two I do not know if I will like doing them. 🙂
During the fifth week, we worked on learning about the letter “E.” To find items for our Letter E Sensory Bin I raided the girls’ toys, my craft supplies, and our school supplies.
Letter E Sensory Bin is a messy bin! I laid a plastic tablecloth over the girls’ table and placed the bin on top of it to help minimize the mess. Yay for thinking ahead! But I still had to sweep the floor. 🙁 At least it smelled nice!
Letter E Sensory Bin
Supplies needed:
- Plastic bin with lid
- Dr. Teal’s Epsom Salt Soaking Solution with Eucalyptus Spearmint 48 oz bag
- Plastic Easter eggs
- Plastic eels
- Rubber or plastic eggplant
- Plastic letter E’s capital and lowercase
- Plastic elephants
- Small plastic earth(s)
- Plastic echidna
- Plastic emu
- Cardboard or plastic eight
- Plastic eagle
- Fine motor tool set
Directions:
- Pour about half the bag of epsom salt into the bin to cover the bottom.
- Add in the plastic toys, letters and numbers.
- Give plastic fine motor tool set to your child to use while exploring the bin.
The girls enjoyed exploring their Letter E Sensory Bin and we all loved the eucalyptus-spearmint scent that filled the room while they played. They used their hands to dig around and find the toys, the fine motor tool set to scoop, grab, and pinch up each item. They also counted the different kinds of items, counted the total number of items in the bin, and tried stacking the items.
The first time the girls started exploring their letter “E” sensory bin, I read 8 An Animal Alphabet from our Tot School Letter E Books list. During the rest of the week, we listen to music genres or instruments that begin with the letter “E”.
